License Requirements

The board identifies three required advanced-practice courses: collaborative practice, the approval process, and protocols/skills/professional responsibilities. Use the board’s required-CE page to complete and retain these courses.

Maintain Alabama or compact RN authority and qualifying graduate NP education with current specialty certification. Submit the fee, direct official transcript, direct certification verification and the standard protocol for each collaborating physician, unless an applicable exemption is approved. Complete the board’s collaborative-practice rules education within the specified 48-month-before/12-month-after commencement window.

Timing: Before initial state authorization

Conditions & Exceptions: Standard NP application. Additional documents apply to international education, reentry, discipline, name changes and other nonstandard routes.

The board’s September 2026 downtime packet requests the paper initial application, $175 fee, Standard Protocol and Quality Assurance Plan, plus direct school transcript and certifier verification. Use the board’s current application page to select the Alabama-RN or non-Alabama multistate-RN packet.

CRNPs practice through collaboration with an Alabama physician. Drug prescribing operates within the authorized collaborative framework.

Conditions & Exceptions: Collaboration does not automatically mean continuous on-site physician presence. CRNP rules differ from those for other APRN roles.
