Employed NP wages, a W-2 benchmark. These are employer-survey estimates, not tax-return averages. Self-employed NPs are excluded. The dataset uses the separate NP occupation, not a combined APRN group, and does not add CRNA, CNS, CNL or nurse-midwife categories. BLS definitions

Middle 50% means the 25th through 75th percentiles. State wages are not adjusted for cost of living. The national average comes from BLS’s national estimate, not an average of state averages.
EMPLOYEE & CONTRACT WORK
W-2 and 1099 Need Different Comparisons
Employee wage benchmark
$137,300 mean
$132,300 median; $66.01 hourly mean.
BLS measures straight-time gross wages and specified incentive pay. Benefits, overtime and on-call pay are excluded. Annual figures use 2,080 hours and are not each worker’s actual annual earnings.
No comparable, recent, public NP-only national 1099 mean or median was verified in the reviewed primary sources. OEWS cannot supply it because self-employment is excluded.
Contract billings must cover unpaid time, expenses and benefits that an employer may otherwise provide. Confirm whether a locum offer is W-2 or 1099; temporary work alone does not establish tax status.
Advertised NP locum examples (observed September 21, 2026)
Advertised NP locum rates
Examples observed in CompHealth’s NP listings on September 21, 2026. These are advertised ranges, not accepted pay, a representative survey or verified 1099 averages.
Illustrative gross contract revenue. Edit all three assumptions to match a quote. This is not a national wage estimate, take-home pay or a W-2 equivalent.
Rate × billable hours × paid weeks. Before taxes, business expenses and benefits.
Sources, population and limitations
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025. Retrieved September 21, 2026. Query: National and statewide areas; cross-industry private, federal, state and local ownership (000000); Nurse Practitioners (29-1171); all data types. All 51 state/DC rows returned wage estimates. The separate national row is preserved.
The occupation is defined by the job, not a separate certification survey. This page does not pool other nursing occupations. OEWS includes full-time and part-time wage-and-salary workers. Annualized wage estimates, specialty surveys, taxable W-2 totals and gross contractor revenue are different measures.
The relative standard error (RSE) indicates sampling precision. Smaller is more precise. Percentiles, hourly values and annual values are reproduced as published; independent rounding can cause small differences when multiplying hourly values by 2,080. Mode is not supplied and has not been estimated from the mean and median.
These are dated data snapshots with live source links. The page does not automatically refresh BLS releases or job listings. AANP’s current public report index identifies a 2024 compensation report with restricted full-report access; its unpublished tables have not been imputed. LocumTenens.com’s public 2024 survey states that its compensation results describe full-time permanent employees, so those results were not relabeled as contractor pay.
