Stage

Florida: APRN, initial licensure

Prepare the state-specific education, certification, application and practice documents below. Separate prescribing approvals appear under Prescriptive Authority and State Rx / CS.

  1. NP application checklist

Hold a valid RN license from a U.S. jurisdiction for initial APRN licensure. Submit the application, fee, qualifying graduate education, national-certification evidence and proof of malpractice insurance or exemption. Complete FDLE Livescan fingerprinting. Standard APRN licensure and autonomous-practice registration are separate applications.

    Timing
    Before initial state authorization
    Conditions
Standard NP application. Additional documents apply to international education, reentry, discipline, name changes and other nonstandard routes.
  2. NP practice and prescribing

Registered autonomous APRNs may practice autonomously in primary care, including family medicine, general pediatrics and general internal medicine. Autonomous registration does not remove applicable drug-specific prescribing limits.

    Timing
    During practice
    Conditions
Separate registration is required. Eligibility includes 3,000 supervised APRN clinical hours within the preceding five years and specified recent differential-diagnosis and pharmacology education. This is not unrestricted autonomy for every specialty.
  3. 3,000 Supervised hours within 5 years

Qualifying APRN clinical hours must be supervised by a physician. Obtain separate autonomous registration and satisfy the recent differential-diagnosis and pharmacology education requirements. Autonomy is limited to qualifying primary care.

    Timing
Before independent practice or prescribing, as specified
    Conditions
Clinical practice hours are not continuing-education hours. Board approval may be required.

Coverage and conditions

  • Use the checklist for the standard NP route. International education, reentry, military pathways, older educational exceptions and disciplinary history can require additional board documents. Submit the board’s current application; this site does not submit it for you.
