Stage

Massachusetts: APRN, initial licensure

Prepare the state-specific education, certification, application and practice documents below. Separate prescribing approvals appear under Prescriptive Authority and State Rx / CS.

  1. NP application checklist

Apply through the Health Professions Licensing Portal. Maintain RN licensure; arrange direct final graduate transcripts showing preparation in the requested APRN category and graduate assessment, pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics. Provide accepted national certification, required good-moral-character disclosures and verification from every jurisdiction in which you held a nursing license. Apply for MassHealth enrollment as a billing or nonbilling provider.

    Timing
    Before initial state authorization
    Conditions
Standard NP application. Additional documents apply to international education, reentry, discipline, name changes and other nonstandard routes.
  2. NP practice and prescribing

NP practice and the removal of supervised-prescribing guidelines are distinct questions. APRNs with fewer than two years of qualifying prescribing experience need prescriptive-practice guidelines with a qualified healthcare professional.

    Timing
    During practice
    Conditions
After at least two years of qualifying supervised or independent prescribing, the APRN may amend the Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration by attestation. This is not an automatic change to registration.
  3. 2 Years of qualifying prescribing

The requirement is measured in years, not a fixed number of clinical hours. Eligible supervised or independent prescribing experience supports an attestation to amend the state registration.

    Timing
Before independent practice or prescribing, as specified
    Conditions
Clinical practice hours are not continuing-education hours. Board approval may be required.

Coverage and conditions

  • Use the checklist for the standard NP route. International education, reentry, military pathways, older educational exceptions and disciplinary history can require additional board documents. Submit the board’s current application; this site does not submit it for you.
