Michigan: APRN, initial licensure
Prepare the state-specific education, certification, application and practice documents below. Separate prescribing approvals appear under Prescriptive Authority and State Rx / CS.
Human trafficking and implicit bias
Retain required human-trafficking training and complete applicable implicit-bias training. Human-trafficking training cannot be counted toward renewal CE; qualifying implicit-bias training can be counted.
- Timing
- Human trafficking: one-time licensure training; implicit bias follows R 338.7004
NP application checklist
Hold an active Michigan RN license. In MiPLUS, select Modification next to the RN license and apply for NP specialty certification. Pay the specialty fee and have the accepted national certifying organization send current certification directly to LARA. Do not submit a duplicate application if the specialty is already active.
- Timing
- Before initial state authorization
- Conditions
- Standard NP application. Additional documents apply to international education, reentry, discipline, name changes and other nonstandard routes.
NP practice and prescribing
Michigan recognizes nurse practitioners as APRNs through specialty certification. Board rules expressly include comprehensive assessment, examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and chronic illness, laboratory and imaging authority, and pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions within the NP's specialty role and scope. APRNs may prescribe nonscheduled drugs without physician delegation. Schedule II–V controlled substances require physician delegation and written authorization.
- Timing
- During practice
- Conditions
- No general physician-supervision requirement for the NP functions expressly defined in the Board rule, and no post-licensure transition-to-practice hours, were identified in the reviewed authorities. Physician delegation remains required for Schedule II–V prescribing and may apply to other acts governed by separate delegation provisions.
Coverage and conditions
- Use the checklist for the standard NP route. International education, reentry, military pathways, older educational exceptions and disciplinary history can require additional board documents. Submit the board’s current application; this site does not submit it for you.
