Texas: APRN, initial licensure
Prepare the state-specific education, certification, application and practice documents below. Separate prescribing approvals appear under Prescriptive Authority and State Rx / CS.
NP application checklist
Maintain a Texas RN license or compact privilege. Submit the APRN application and fee, direct graduate-program documentation including the three separate advanced clinical courses and clinical hours, current national certification, all professional-license history and explanations for eligibility questions. Document 400 role/population practice hours in the last 24 months or APRN graduation within that period; otherwise use the specified reentry pathway.
- Timing
- Before initial state authorization
- Conditions
- Standard NP application. Additional documents apply to international education, reentry, discipline, name changes and other nonstandard routes.
NP practice and prescribing
Texas APRNs practice within their nursing role; medical delegation and prescribing have distinct physician-relationship requirements. Prescribing requires physician delegation through a prescriptive-authority agreement or an applicable facility-based arrangement.
- Timing
- During practice
- Conditions
- Clinical hours do not independently end the delegation requirement. Schedule II authority is limited to the qualifying hospital and hospice circumstances specified in the statute.
Coverage and conditions
- Use the checklist for the standard NP route. International education, reentry, military pathways, older educational exceptions and disciplinary history can require additional board documents. Submit the board’s current application; this site does not submit it for you.
