New license planner
Build an itemized budget for an additional state NP license: board fees, verification, background checks and the items you still need to price.
Informational guidance only. Confirm current requirements with the appropriate licensing authority before applying, renewing or practicing. Read the disclaimer
In your plan: Tennessee. Add more states to compare them. Which states do telehealth employers ask for?
What this planner covers
An expansion budget for an NP who already holds at least one NP license and the required RN authority; first-license, international-education and waiver routes need separate review. Base application fees are covered for 51 of 51 jurisdictions, which does not mean every pathway or ancillary cost is priced. AANPCB sends verification to state boards at no charge; other certifiers may charge per request (AANPCB handbook (opens in a new tab)).

Licenses you already hold
Add them to calculate outgoing verification fees.
Add current and past licenses a destination may ask you to verify; no license numbers are needed. Mark the original license for each credential and the most recent state (for Louisiana, the current APRN license in your last employment state). Participating APRN records default to the $30 Nursys RN bundle; nonparticipating records use direct requests.
One destination, one verification budget. Requests are counted separately for each destination. Participating RN and APRN records are grouped into one $30 Nursys request per destination. California direct-board RN and APRN requests are combined when both are selected. Where scope or personal history is unresolved, requests remain provisional and the gap is shown.

Answer these before the fees
4 of 4 unanswered. Fees that depend on these answers are held back, so the budget does not list every possible charge.
Itemized budget
Published references, dated receipts, allowances and your quotes are labeled separately. Unresolved items are excluded from the subtotal. Open details for caveats, evidence and sources.
The itemized fees appear once the 4 questions above are answered. Your answers decide which charges apply, so nothing is totaled for Tennessee yet.
License verification stays unresolved until you add your issuing states under Licenses you already hold, or enter a total quote on the verification line.
Renewal cost is not included in the total. Where the renewal fee is verified it appears in the summary above; check the state board for the cycle and continuing education before deciding what this license will cost to maintain.
Verification requests for Tennessee0 selected
Standard-route planning: no separate other-state APRN verification request appears in the complete published requirements. This is a checklist-based inference, not an explicit waiver. The full APRN application instruction sheet requires national certification, graduate transcript, current RN copy and citizenship documents; criminal records are conditional. RN endorsement instructions request the originally licensed state.

These rules apply to additional-state / endorsement planning; first-license scope needs separate review.
Add every current and past issuing state under Licenses you already hold to calculate requests. Enter a total verified quote only if it covers every request this destination requires.
Practice context in TennesseeRestricted: physician relationship
The joint nursing and medical-board rules require supervision and written clinical protocols for certified NP/prescription writers.
Prescribing
Prescribing requires a certificate of fitness, the supervising physician information and a formulary. Controlled substances require DEA authorization.
State conditions
Supervision does not mean the physician must be continuously on site, but availability and the rule’s review requirements apply. No experience-hours route to removing this relationship is stated in these rules.
Practice checked September 20, 2026. See the full practice reference for source limitations. Tennessee Boards · Rules 0880-06-.01 and -.02 (opens in a new tab)
Also weigh employer demand, your population focus, collaboration availability, renewal costs and CE workload. Population alone cannot tell you which license will pay for itself.
Shared and federal costs, counted once
$0–$99
3 questions not answered; left out of the total.
Added once to the combined plan. Existing licenses, certifications and DEA registrations are sunk costs, so include only new expenses.
One $0–$99 short-course reserve across the entire plan, not per state. The low end assumes requirements already satisfied or accepted free courses; $99 uses the published annual Unlimited Plus CE package as a planning example. Check each course’s topic, hours and board acceptance. State-specific exams already listed remain separate. Formal graduate, remedial, clinical or re-entry training is outside this reserve: enter its actual additional cost under Other Shared Costs. This is not a guarantee that one package satisfies every state. CE price example (opens in a new tab)
The correct number of DEA registrations depends on your practice locations and applicable exceptions; this page does not assume one per state. DEA fee regulation (opens in a new tab) NPDB subscription (opens in a new tab)
APRN verification outside Nursys
Tennessee reports APRN records to Nursys, so a separate direct-board APRN request is not in this table. Show all states to compare the boards that do not.

How to read this table
The Nursys participation tables list no APRN reporting for the states below, checked September 21, 2026. All 51 jurisdictions in this calculator report RN records to QuickConfirm; that does not establish acceptance of a particular verification service. QuickConfirm table (opens in a new tab) Endorsement table (opens in a new tab)
One $30 Nursys request can cover RN and participating APRN records. NCSBN says to select RN and that participating APRN records are included at no extra charge. Direct requests may still be needed for nonparticipating boards or additional information required by the destination. West Virginia also directs APRN requests to its board and is routed separately in the calculator. Service guidance checked October 4, 2026; the participation snapshot retains its own date because the live table could not be re-read during that review. NCSBN APRN instructions (opens in a new tab)
RN endorsement verification through Nursys is $30 for each destination state. A separate APRN request may add a fee even when the same board issues both credentials. California’s direct-board request bundles its RN and advanced-practice records; the calculator counts that bundle once.

Compare the documented routes below, then select the route in your state budget. A processing fee may exclude collection, card conversion, out-of-state service or postage. A missing price means the cost or applicability is unresolved; it does not mean the check is free. Only reuse an earlier check when the receiving board explicitly accepts it.
Use the receiving board’s profession and service code when requesting a quote. Ask what the total includes, whether remote enrollment changes the price, and how rejected prints are handled. School transcripts depend on your actual programs and delivery choices. Budget only unmet education and applicant-specific extras. None has a universal state-level price.
Building a license portfolio for telehealth
For multistate telehealth work, a portfolio of roughly 5–10 strategically chosen active NP licenses can make you a fit for more employers: you can see patients in more jurisdictions and meet more employers’ licensing requirements. Treat that range as a practical expansion strategy, not a proven optimal number or a hiring threshold.
Why additional licenses can help
- More patients you can see. Each active NP license adds a jurisdiction where you can treat patients, which matters to employers staffing visits across many states.
- More postings you match. Many telehealth postings name the states they need. Holding those states makes you eligible for more of those roles.
- Which states matters as much as how many. Some employers accept fewer licenses; others ask for more than ten. A few well-chosen states can do more than many unrequested ones.
A license expands eligibility. It does not guarantee an offer, patient volume, higher pay or completed credentialing. Employers also weigh your specialty, experience, prescribing authority, the practice conditions in each state and where you live.
Counting your licenses
Count the distinct states where you hold an active NP (APRN) license. An RN license and an NP license in the same state cover one state, not two.
RN compact (NLC) privileges do not give NP authority in any state.
States requested by employers in our review
From 11 telehealth employers’ own postings and recruiting pages for urgent care, primary care, general telehealth and weight-management roles, checked October 14, 2026. A small sample that shows examples, not a national ranking. Postings that give a number asked for anywhere from at least 3 to 30 or more licenses.
How we reviewed employers, license counts and specialty roles
Reopened the three seed sources, then pulled full posting text from public ATS APIs (Lever, Greenhouse, Ashby, Workable, Workday CXS) for ~90 telehealth company slugs and from leads found by web search (standard mode). Only states that the posting or guidance text explicitly names as required, preferred, or high-demand were recorded. Syndicated duplicates and per-shift variants were collapsed, and closed or unverifiable leads went to excludedLeads.

Sources
We counted a state only when an employer named it as required, as one of a list of states that meets a requirement (for example, “at least two of” a list), or as preferred or high-demand, once per employer per state, and kept active postings separate from recruiting guidance. States an employer merely serves, job locations, salary, population and practice authority were not counted as demand. Closed or redirected postings and specialty-only roles (for example, psychiatric NP roles) are excluded from the counts. Employer wording such as “independent practice states” is the employer’s, not a legal classification; see practice authority for each state’s rules.
Sample: 15 employers with open postings and 1 with recruiting guidance. Postings change often; reopen the source before relying on it.

How to choose your next licenses
- List the roles you would actually take, and note the states those postings require or prefer.
- Favor states that appear across several employers you are targeting, not just one.
- Check practice conditions. A collaboration agreement or transition period can limit what a new license lets you do at first.
- Price the first year and every renewal, and keep the licenses you can afford to maintain.
- Apply first for what a written offer requires, then for states that are only preferred.
Price and review those states
- Add states to this planner to price applications, verifications and shared costs.
- Compare renewal fees before adding a license you will need to keep.
- Review application requirements for each state.
- Check practice authority and prescribing for each state.
Before you apply
Your target work, existing credentials and budget should set the order of applications. Four decisions to settle before paying a board fee.
Separate credentials from permissions
An RN license, APRN authority and prescribing approval answer different questions. An RN multistate license does not supply APRN authority in every compact state.
Record for each target state: RN license or privilege, APRN credential, national certification, prescribing approval and any collaboration or experience condition. Mark each confirmed, needed or not applicable, with the official source and the date checked. NLC: RN compact eligibility and APRNs
Give every license a job
A license has value when it supports work you can realistically obtain and maintain. Write the employer or practice plan, patient population and anticipated start date next to each proposed state.
Ask the employer: is the credential required before the interview, the offer or the first patient? What is reimbursed, and does reimbursement carry repayment terms? Sort states into apply now, clarify first and hold. Fund a written offer’s requirement before a state that is only preferred.
Budget the first year and the renewal cycle
Application fees alone understate the cost. The planner above prices the initial application; renewal fees, CE, collaboration fees and other ongoing obligations need a separate maintenance list with actual due dates.
Keep visible: who pays each item, a contingency for documents that must be reordered, and the difference between verified board fees and your own estimates. Revisit unused licenses at renewal using their full recurring cost.
Sequence applications around real dependencies
Each board sets what it needs before submission, approval and prescribing. Record its prerequisites and whether it asks for original, current, all held or previously held licenses; RN verification and advanced-practice verification are separate requests.
Plan the order: run independent tasks together (transcripts, fingerprints) and put approvals that depend on an earlier license on the timeline. Read each application’s update obligations and disclose every required license and change; do not assume one board’s process applies nationally.
References and methodology
This is an expansion budget for a U.S. NP who already holds at least one NP license and the required RN authority. Published fees, dated evidence, planning allowances, user-entered quotes and unresolved costs remain distinct. The planning range is not a statistical confidence interval or a guaranteed maximum. State rules and population data are stored in the site; opening this page does not trigger a new source lookup.
Base application fee coverage: 51 / 51 jurisdictions, including DC. Coverage establishes at least one standard route. Other routes and costs may apply. Reconfirm current checkout amounts.
Additional official-source findings and the complete APRN verification and fingerprint reference tables remain available in the reference sections above. Base fee review: September 21, 2026. Targeted fee and verification audit: October 4, 2026. Next fee review: December 21, 2026.
Renewal fees, ongoing CE, ongoing collaboration fees, malpractice and business operating costs are not included. The application budget separately shows unmet application courses and any documented setup charges. Download the budget before leaving because plans are held only while this page is open.
